Texas A&M University Discontinues Women's and Gender Studies Program Amid Policy Changes

Texas A&M University recently announced the discontinuation of its Women's and Gender Studies degree program due to limited student interest and university policies. The university assured current students enrolled in the program that they would be able to complete their degrees.

Interim President Tommy Williams emphasized the university's commitment to academic integrity and public trust in a statement. The decision to eliminate the program was communicated to faculty by College of Arts and Sciences Interim Dean Simon North and Senior Executive Associate Cynthia Werner via email.

The university offered a bachelor of arts degree, a bachelor of science degree, an undergraduate minor, and a graduate certificate in the Women's and Gender Studies program. The program had 25 students pursuing a major and 31 seeking a minor.

Following a comprehensive course review for the Spring 2026 semester, Texas A&M modified hundreds of syllabi across 17 colleges and schools to ensure compliance with its policies. The university granted exemptions for 48 courses out of the 54 requested by deans.

The course review was initiated after a video of a student being removed from a class for questioning transgender-related content went viral. The incident led the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents to demand an audit of all courses to ensure compliance with applicable laws.

In November 2024, the board of regents eliminated 52 "low-producing" minors and certificate programs, including the LGBTQ Studies minor under the Women and Gender Studies Department. Despite the college's request to retain the program, it was denied by the university's provost.
