Search and Rescue Operation for Fishing Vessel Lily Jean in Massachusetts Waters

The US Coast Guard is conducting a search and rescue operation in Massachusetts waters following the sinking of a commercial fishing boat named Lily Jean. The vessel, carrying seven individuals, including a NOAA observer, went down 25 miles off the coast of Cape Ann. The Coast Guard received an EPIRB alert from the boat and initiated a search effort involving helicopters, small boats, and the cutter Thunder Bay. Debris, a body, and an unoccupied life raft were discovered in the vicinity of the distress signal. The search and rescue mission is ongoing, with the state of Massachusetts offering its full support.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed her sorrow over the incident and extended support to the affected families and the Gloucester community. The fishing vessel Lily Jean and its crew, led by Captain Gus Sanfilippo, were previously featured on the History Channel show "Nor'Easter Men." Sanfilippo, a fifth-generation fisherman, specialized in haddock, lobster, and flounder. State Senator Bruce Tarr, a friend of the missing captain, praised Sanfilippo's skills and predicted a display of strength from the fishing community in Gloucester, known for its historic fishing industry. Gloucester, located on Cape Ann, is a coastal city north of Boston with a rich maritime heritage.
The search for survivors of the Lily Jean continues as the Coast Guard and local authorities work tirelessly to locate the missing crew members and provide assistance to their families during this challenging time.
