Love and Resilience: A U.S. Citizen's Fight to Free His Detained Ukrainian Wife

A U.S. citizen's wife, a Ukrainian asylum seeker, has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during what they thought was a routine immigration appointment. Maryna Ishchenko is currently held at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center. Her husband, Asael Ramirez, shared their love story and the dangerous situation in her hometown in eastern Ukraine due to ongoing fighting. Seeking asylum, they were shocked when Maryna was handcuffed and detained during their immigration appointment. Despite being released once, she was detained again at a subsequent appointment, causing distress to the couple.

Ramirez expressed his concerns for Maryna's safety and well-being, especially as she is experiencing medical issues while in detention. Advocacy groups have filed a lawsuit against the Adelanto facility, citing inhumane conditions and neglect. Congressman Raul Ruiz was also denied entry into the facility, raising questions about transparency and accountability. Immigration attorney Jacob Sapochnick highlighted the changing policies around detention and emphasized that Maryna, being married to a U.S. citizen, should have a chance for release on bond to await her asylum case.

Facing financial challenges in pursuing legal avenues for Maryna's release, Ramirez remains determined and hopeful. He is seeking support through a GoFundMe campaign to cover the costs of legal representation. Despite the lack of response from ICE regarding Maryna's case and potential deportation risks, Ramirez is committed to fighting for his wife's freedom and reuniting with her. The couple's resilience and determination in the face of adversity showcase their unwavering love and commitment to each other.
