Protesters Arrested at Senator Collins' Office Demand Change in Immigration Funding
Nine individuals were arrested during a protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement at Senator Susan Collins' office in Portland, Maine. The Portland Police Department reported that approximately 50 protesters were present on the eighth floor of One Canal Plaza, a downtown office building. Despite warnings to disperse, nine protesters remained and requested to be arrested. The arrested individuals, aged between 31 and 65, sang protest songs and urged Senator Collins to stop funding ICE.
Among the arrested protesters was Christine Dyke, a minister at the Gorham First Parish Congregational Church, who expressed concerns about ICE's deportation operations in Maine causing fear in the immigrant community. The protesters highlighted the challenges faced by asylum seekers and criticized the lack of a welcoming environment for immigrants in the country. Senator Collins' office has been contacted for a response to the protest and her stance on funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
Senator Collins has been advocating for a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security, emphasizing that the majority of the funding is allocated to non-immigration and non-border security activities. She urged for bipartisan cooperation to prevent a government shutdown and address the aftermath of the recent fatal shooting in Minneapolis. The protesters' actions reflect a growing concern over immigration policies and funding decisions, prompting calls for change and accountability in government actions.
