Embracing the Legacy of Michael Jackson: Dance Workshops and Community Building with Choreographer Justin Prescott

Dance choreographer Justin Prescott, originally from Houston, TX, has been dancing since childhood and has worked on choreography for various Broadway shows. He believes in sharing his passion for dance with others and recently worked on the choreography for MJ the Musical at the Fox Theatre. Prescott emphasizes that anyone can learn the basics of dance and enjoy moving together with others, inspired by the iconic style of Michael Jackson.
Participants like Torian Cole attended a dance workshop at the Alliance Theatre to learn some of Michael Jackson's signature moves. Cole found the experience fulfilling as she mastered the dance steps alongside others in a supportive environment. She highlighted the mental and physical health benefits of dancing and described the workshop as a judgment-free zone where everyone could have fun and let loose.
For Cole, dancing is a way to stay active and intentional in movement, even outside of formal dance classes. She emphasized the joy of stylizing movement and how it can positively impact one's day. Inspired by Michael Jackson's legacy, Prescott aims to create a sense of community through dance, bringing people together to support and uplift each other in a world often dominated by social media.
MJ the Musical, currently showing at the Fox Theatre, tells the story of Michael Jackson's Dangerous World Tour in 1992 and features talented performers, including Atlanta natives. The show celebrates Jackson's music and dance legacy, showcasing the impact of his artistry on both performers and audiences. Through dance and music, the community comes together to honor the King of Pop's influence and create a space of connection and support for all.
