Maui Wildfire Survivors Receive Extended FEMA Housing Assistance: Governor Green's Commitment to Stability and Recovery

The State of Hawaiʻi, under Governor Josh Green, has successfully secured an extension of FEMA Temporary Housing Assistance for Maui wildfire survivors until February 2027. This extension aims to provide stability for individuals and families affected by the August 2023 wildfires. Governor Green advocated for this extension to address the ongoing housing challenges on Maui and ensure continuity for families as they rebuild their lives. The state-supported housing program at Ka La‘i Ola will also continue through August 2029, aligning with the federal assistance to provide long-term housing solutions without disruption.

Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen expressed gratitude for the extension, emphasizing its importance in maintaining stability for displaced families. The extension will support the expedited rebuilding of over 400 housing units in Lahaina since the wildfires, with more rebuilds in progress and affordable housing units being constructed countywide. The collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies, along with community partners, has been instrumental in supporting the recovery efforts and ensuring survivors have the necessary resources for rebuilding their lives.

The commitment of Governor Green, Mayor Bissen, and various agencies involved in the recovery process has been crucial in providing support and guidance to the affected communities. The extension of FEMA housing assistance will enable continued collaboration between DHS, the state, and county to facilitate the recovery of those impacted by the disaster. Housing remains a key focus in Maui's recovery, and efforts will continue to transition families into permanent homes efficiently and responsibly. The extension of housing assistance offers families breathing room and allows for sustained recovery efforts to yield lasting results.
