Federal Agent Charged with Misdemeanor Battery in Brookfield, Illinois: Immigrant Rights Activist Confrontation

A federal agent in Brookfield, Illinois, was charged with misdemeanor battery by the local police after a scuffle with an immigrant rights activist. The incident occurred when the off-duty agent, Adam Saracco, allegedly threw the activist, Robert Held, to the ground while being filmed at a gas station near an immigrant detention center. Mr. Held, a trust and estate lawyer, recounted the confrontation, stating that he managed to retain his phone despite the agent's attempt to take it.
Following the altercation, the Brookfield Police Department initiated an investigation, which led to the misdemeanor battery charge against the agent. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and decided not to pursue felony charges, opting for a misdemeanor charge instead. Mr. Saracco is scheduled to appear in court in March to address the charge.
While federal immigration agents have faced criticism for their actions, local prosecutions of such agents are uncommon. Mr. Held expressed satisfaction with the accountability in this case and highlighted the importance of recording ICE agents' activities to promote transparency and accountability. The incident underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement and the need for oversight in such operations.
