2026 Midterm Election Voter Sentiment: Democrats Lead on Generic Congressional Ballot, Gender Divide in Preferences, and Growing Dissatisfaction with Country's Direction

A recent national survey conducted by Emerson College Polling indicates that Democrats are currently leading Republicans by six points on the generic congressional ballot, with a significant advantage among independent voters. The survey shows that 48% of likely voters support a generic Democratic candidate, while 42% support a generic Republican candidate. Both parties have strong support within their own ranks, but Democrats have a substantial lead among independents, with 50% supporting Democratic candidates compared to 28% supporting Republicans.

The survey also highlights a gender divide in voter preferences, with women favoring Democratic candidates by a margin of 53% to 38%, while men are more evenly split, with 47% supporting Republicans and 42% supporting Democrats. Additionally, the poll reveals a record high disapproval rating for President Donald Trump during his second term, with 51% of voters disapproving of his job performance and 43% approving.

Furthermore, the survey indicates a growing dissatisfaction among voters with the state of the country, as the percentage of those who believe the country is on the wrong track has increased to 56% from 48% since the beginning of last year. Among voters living paycheck to paycheck, 64% believe the country is on the wrong track.

On the issue of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a majority of likely voters (57%) believe that ICE's presence in communities is more harmful than beneficial, including white (51%), Hispanic (55%), and Black voters (82%). Additionally, a plurality of voters oppose the Trump administration's actions in Venezuela, with 46% opposing the capture of President Nicolas Maduro by U.S. forces.

Regarding Greenland, 50% of voters oppose adding the island as a U.S. territory, while 28% are in favor of the idea and 22% are unsure. The survey also assessed the favorability ratings of various federal government officials, with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell receiving a +18 rating (45% favorable, 27% unfavorable).

Overall, the survey provides insights into voter sentiment and preferences ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, highlighting the current political landscape and key issues of concern among likely voters.
