Legal and Legislative Battles Over Trump's Name on Kennedy Center

The decision to add President Trump's name to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., has sparked legal and legislative challenges. A federal lawsuit and two congressional measures are aiming to remove Trump's name from the center's exterior signs and website. Rep. Joyce Beatty, a Kennedy Center trustee, filed a federal civil lawsuit alleging that the board violated the law by adding Trump's name without congressional approval. The lawsuit seeks to nullify the name change and restore the center's original name.

The Trump administration is expected to respond to Beatty's lawsuit by the end of February. Beatty's lawsuit argues that changing the Kennedy Center's name requires an act of Congress, as it was designated as the national memorial to President Kennedy by statute. The decision to rename the center was made by a new board appointed by Trump, which included his loyalists. The cost of the name change and other modifications to the center is currently unknown.

Norm Eisen, a Washington, D.C.-based attorney challenging the name change, highlighted the significant impact of the decision on the center's operations and reputation. Congressional Democrats, including Rep. April McClain Delaney and Rep. Stephen Lynch, have introduced bills and resolutions to reverse the name change. Delaney's bill calls for the removal of any signage that differs from the original designation of the Kennedy Center. Critics of the name change view it as an attempt by Trump to enshrine himself and criticize it as arrogant and narcissistic.

Rep. Steve Cohen condemned the renaming effort, describing it as a disrespect to President Kennedy's legacy and the cultural excellence he supported. The legal and legislative challenges reflect the controversy surrounding the decision to add Trump's name to the historic Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
