Refuge: Brooklyn's New Sanctuary for Electronic Music Enthusiasts

John Dimatteo and Craig “Shorty” Bernabeu recently opened a new nightclub in Brooklyn called Refuge, aiming to create a sanctuary for electronic music. The club, located in a 19th-century industrial complex in East Williamsburg, boasts a high-definition soundsystem designed by Bernabeu, known for his work at other New York clubs. Since its opening in September, Refuge has hosted renowned artists like Floorplan and DJ Seinfeld, with plans to introduce daytime shows and artist residencies in the future.

The club has quickly found its rhythm, attracting a diverse crowd of music enthusiasts of all ages. Refuge aims to provide an escape from the outside world, creating a unique atmosphere where people can enjoy quality music and dance freely. Unlike many other clubs in New York, Refuge prioritizes the club experience over individual headliners, ensuring a consistent vibe and identity for each event.

Refuge caters to a mindset rather than a specific demographic, welcoming anyone who appreciates good music and a vibrant party atmosphere. The club underwent a significant remodel to accommodate the state-of-the-art sound system and upgrade the building's infrastructure. Exciting elements of the space include a floating wood dance floor designed for extended dance sessions and a custom DJ booth that seamlessly integrates with the venue.

Looking ahead to early 2026, Refuge plans to continue enhancing the club experience by fine-tuning the sound system, introducing new features like a performance stage that doubles as a dancefloor platform, and constantly improving the overall ambiance of the space. With a focus on providing a unique and immersive nightlife experience, Refuge aims to be a go-to destination for music lovers in Brooklyn and beyond.
