Prepare for Travel: REAL ID Compliance and TSA ConfirmID Process Explained

If you have upcoming travel plans and do not have a REAL ID-compliant form of identification, you may face a $45 fee. The national minimum requirement for state driver’s licenses and ID cards has been in effect since last spring, mandating a REAL ID or an approved alternative for domestic air travel. The TSA has reported that over 94% of travelers are compliant, but those who are not will soon have the option to use TSA ConfirmID starting on Feb. 1. This process involves providing biographic and/or biometric information, paying a $45 fee, and undergoing additional ID verification at the airport.

Completing the TSA ConfirmID process and paying the fee will allow you to proceed through TSA security checkpoints. However, without a compliant REAL ID or ConfirmID, you may face delays and potentially miss your flight. The process can take up to 30 minutes, so it is crucial to plan ahead. The ConfirmID verification is valid for 10 days, so if your return flight falls within that timeframe, you will not need to repeat the process.

To determine if your ID is REAL ID-compliant, check for a star on your driver’s license or state ID card. The star may be black or gold, filled in or an outline, indicating compliance. Some states issue enhanced driver’s licenses marked with a flag, which can facilitate land or sea travel to neighboring countries. If you do not have a REAL ID, other acceptable forms of identification include passports, Department of Defense IDs, and federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe photo IDs.

For domestic air travel, REAL IDs are optional, and alternative forms of identification are accepted. Clear ID, Apple Digital ID, and Google ID passes are also valid at select airports. Expired IDs are accepted up to two years past the expiration date. It is essential to be prepared with the appropriate identification to avoid delays and ensure a smooth travel experience.
