Virginia's Historic Inauguration: Abigail Spanberger Sworn in as 75th Governor

Virginia is set to witness a historic moment this weekend as Abigail Spanberger is inaugurated as the 75th governor of the commonwealth, making her the first woman to hold this position. The inauguration ceremony will take place on Saturday at the Virginia State Capitol Building in Richmond, where Spanberger will be sworn in alongside Lt. Gov.-elect Ghazala Hashmi and Attorney General-elect Jay Jones. Hashmi will become the first Muslim woman to hold statewide office in the United States, while Jones will be the commonwealth's first Black attorney general. The event is expected to last about an hour, with Spanberger delivering a speech.

Following the inauguration ceremony, an inaugural parade will take place around the Virginia State Capitol. Gov. Spanberger will then proceed to sign a series of executive orders addressing various issues, including open seats on the University of Virginia's Board of Visitors, the deputization of Virginia State Police officers for Immigration and Customs Enforcement support, and the treatment of transgender students in public schools. Other key priorities for the new administration include addressing the cost and impact of data centers, as well as improving affordability for housing and healthcare. Despite facing financial challenges due to the loss of federal funds, Spanberger remains committed to leading with a message of unity under the theme "United for Virginia's Future."
