Update on NYC Nurses' Strike Negotiations: Talks with Mount Sinai Hospitals Begin, Montefiore Discussions Pending

New York City nurses who are on strike have resumed contract negotiations with one of the major hospital systems impacted by the ongoing walkout. The New York State Nurses Association announced that their bargaining team has started discussions with the Mount Sinai hospitals at the request of a mediator. This comes after a meeting with NewYork-Presbyterian officials and a federal mediator on Thursday night, which did not result in significant progress towards resolving the strike, now in its fifth day. The focus of the talks has been on addressing the union's concerns about staffing levels, with both sides expressing commitment to bargaining in good faith.

The negotiations with Mount Sinai hospitals have begun following the unsuccessful meeting with NewYork-Presbyterian, where the hospital deemed the union's proposals as unreasonable. Despite the union presenting revised proposals, the hospital rejected them without offering a counter proposal. The talks extended past midnight and were attended by around 70 nurses after being opened up to regular union members. While both sides acknowledge being far apart in their positions, they remain committed to finding a resolution. However, there are currently no further plans for future meetings scheduled.

On the other hand, negotiations with Montefiore, the third major hospital system affected by the strike, have not yet resumed. The union had anticipated a meeting with Montefiore officials, but the hospital denied any planned meeting. The union president emphasized the readiness of NYSNA nurses to engage in negotiations when called upon by mediators and urged hospital executives to do the same. Each hospital system is handling negotiations independently, and not all hospitals within the systems are impacted by the strike. The affected hospitals have been able to maintain operations smoothly by hiring temporary nurses to ensure essential services are provided during the strike.

Dr. Philip Ozuah, president of Montefiore Einstein in the Bronx, commended the staff for their dedication and hard work during the strike. He expressed gratitude for their commitment to providing life-saving care despite the challenging circumstances. As negotiations continue with the hospital systems, the focus remains on finding common ground to address the concerns raised by the nurses and reach a mutually beneficial agreement that ensures safe staffing levels and quality patient care.
