Debunking False Claims: Enrique Tarrio and ICE - The Truth Behind the Social Media Misinformation
Protests in Minneapolis following the shooting of Renee Good by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer have sparked false claims on social media that former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio is now working for the federal agency. Tarrio was recently pardoned by President Donald Trump in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, where he was serving a 22-year prison sentence for his involvement in a failed plot to keep Trump in power after losing the 2020 election. Despite leaked lists of ICE agents circulating online, both Tarrio and ICE have confirmed that he is not and has never been employed by the agency.
Enrique Tarrio has denied the claims of him being an ICE officer on social media, and the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, has also stated that he was never hired by the agency. ICE emphasized that they only recruit professionals who uphold the nation's laws and values, and they condemned the false accusations against Tarrio as damaging to the reputation of their law enforcement officers. Despite Tarrio's initial social media post hinting at being part of a list, he later clarified that it was satire and expressed his desire to work for ICE, which was also misconstrued by some social media users who wrongly identified him as an ICE agent.
The misinformation surrounding Enrique Tarrio's alleged affiliation with ICE has spread widely on various social media platforms, with posts falsely labeling him as a Nazi ICE agent. A whistleblower reportedly leaked information about thousands of ICE and Border Patrol employees to ICE List, an independent website that tracks federal immigration enforcement activities. While Tarrio's name appears on the website, he is not listed as being associated with any agency but is described as a "Propagandist; Agitator." The claims linking Tarrio to ICE have been debunked by both Tarrio himself and the official statements from ICE, highlighting the dangers of misinformation and false accusations on social media platforms.
