Greenville Police Officer Ambushed in Patrol Car Shooting: Suspect Dead After Pursuit

A police officer in Greenville, South Carolina, was targeted in an ambush while sitting in his patrol car when a suspect pulled up beside him and opened fire, resulting in the suspect's death. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division released surveillance footage showing the suspect's vehicle stopping next to the patrol car and firing shots before fleeing the scene, leaving the officer injured.

The injured officer was quickly taken to a hospital for treatment and has since been discharged. Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis mentioned that deputies located the suspect's vehicle, leading to a brief pursuit.

Following multiple exchanges of gunfire during the chase, the suspect's vehicle crashed, resulting in the suspect, identified as David William Lane, 42, being found dead inside. The incident was described as an ambush-style attack against the Greenville city officer by Sheriff Lewis.

The Greenville County Sheriff's Office had prior interactions with Lane after receiving complaints about his behavior and comments from neighbors. Despite concerns raised, no criminal arrest warrant was issued, prompting additional security measures at the Hunting Downs apartment complex where Lane was reported to have been stalking residents.

SLED has been tasked with investigating the ambush at the request of both the Greenville Police Department and the Greenville County Sheriff's Office. The agency plans to conduct a comprehensive independent investigation, including witness interviews and forensic analysis, before presenting its findings to prosecutors.

This incident marks the second officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026 and the first involving the Greenville County Sheriff's Office this year. In 2025, the state recorded 45 officer-involved shootings, with seven involving the sheriff's office.
