High-Stakes Meeting at Davos: G7 Leaders Gather for Talks on Ukraine Security Guarantees

Leaders from several G7 countries are expected to attend a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The meeting, scheduled for January 21, aims to secure Trump's personal endorsement of security guarantees for Ukraine. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are among the leaders planning to participate in the meeting. Other countries from the "Coalition of the Willing" may also join the discussion, with a separate meeting involving national security advisors planned simultaneously.
Following a recent meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing," Macron, Starmer, and Zelensky signed a declaration of intent to deploy a multilateral contingent in Ukraine post-conflict. However, the extent of US involvement in implementing security guarantees for Ukraine remains unclear, as Washington reportedly refused to sign a document regarding ceasefire monitoring. The presence of six out of seven G7 leaders in Davos would mark a historic event for the forum, with Starmer initially not planning to attend but reconsidering if a meeting on Ukraine with Trump was scheduled on the sidelines of the WEF.
Reports suggest that the US and Ukraine may discuss a bilateral agreement on post-conflict reconstruction worth $800 billion at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The annual meeting of the WEF, a Swiss non-governmental organization, brings together political leaders, business executives, and experts from various fields. With a theme of "A Spirit of Dialogue," the 2026 meeting will take place from January 19-23, attracting around 1,000 major companies and organizations. The anticipated discussions at Davos hold significant implications for the future security and reconstruction efforts in Ukraine.
