Adam Johnson: From Capitol Riot to County Commission Candidate

A man from Florida, Adam Johnson, who was photographed carrying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's podium during the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, has filed to run for an at-large seat on the Manatee County Commission as a Republican. Johnson made his filing on the fifth anniversary of the riot, stating that it was intentional to generate attention for his campaign. He is not the only individual connected to the riot to pursue political office, as several others have also run for positions, including those who were convicted and later pardoned by former President Trump.

Johnson's campaign logo features an outline of the viral photograph of him with Pelosi's podium, which he placed in the Capitol Rotunda and posed with for pictures. Despite pleading guilty to entering a restricted building, Johnson compared his offense to "jaywalking" and claimed he was exercising his First Amendment rights. Following his brief prison sentence and supervised release, Johnson expressed regret for his actions only because of the consequences he faced.

In addition to his political aspirations, Johnson has also been involved in a lawsuit against Manatee County and its commissioners over their decision not to seek attorney's fees in a dropped lawsuit. He cited concerns about high property taxes and overdevelopment in the county, criticizing current leaders for wasteful practices. Johnson emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in local politics, stating that his candidacy would bring increased scrutiny to the election process.

As Johnson and other Republican candidates prepare for the upcoming primary in August, the race for the Manatee County Commission seat is expected to draw significant attention due to Johnson's controversial past and his campaign platform centered on fiscal responsibility and government accountability.
