Federal Prosecutor Targets California Governor Newsom for Alleged Misuse of Taxpayer Funds in Homelessness Programs

The current administration is intensifying efforts to combat the misuse of taxpayer funds nationwide. A federal prosecutor criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom for inadequate oversight, dubbing him the "king of fraud."
California has allocated $24 billion towards homelessness in the last five years, but there is a lack of accountability regarding where the funds have been utilized. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli initiated a task force in April to investigate corruption in California, particularly focusing on homeless services. The task force has already led to federal charges against individuals exploiting the state's homelessness system for personal gain through real estate projects.
Essayli emphasized that the cases involving millions of dollars in alleged fraud are just the beginning, hinting at more charges to come in the near future. He criticized Newsom and the Democratic leadership in California for permitting fraud to persist in state-run programs without sufficient oversight or accountability.
The scrutiny on California mirrors federal probes into benefits programs in other Democrat-led states. In Minnesota, federal authorities are investigating widespread fraud in childcare and social services. President Donald Trump also weighed in on the issue, suggesting that California may be more corrupt than Minnesota.
Newsom's press office refuted the accusations, highlighting the governor's efforts to combat fraud and protect taxpayers. Vice President JD Vance criticized California's welfare policies, particularly the provision of benefits to individuals regardless of immigration status. Vance condemned the state for using taxpayer funds to offer Medicaid to illegal immigrants, calling for an end to the political corruption enabling such practices.
