National Inquiry Looms: Pressure Mounts on PM Albanese for Federal Royal Commission into Bondi Terror Attack

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing mounting pressure to call a royal commission into the Bondi terror attack, which claimed the lives of 15 innocent individuals in an alleged anti-Semitic act. Questions have been raised about the Albanese Government's response to anti-Semitism, security and intelligence failures, and radical Islamic extremism. Despite initially favoring a State royal commission, Mr. Albanese has now indicated a Federal inquiry into Government agencies to ensure intelligence sharing and prevent future attacks.
Following calls from various sectors of society, including Jewish leaders, politicians, business figures, and sports personalities, the Prime Minister is reportedly considering a national inquiry. Discussions with Jewish leaders and close advisors are underway to determine the scope and leadership of a potential Federal royal commission. Former High Court justice Virginia Bell is rumored to be Mr. Albanese's top choice to lead the inquiry, although other candidates like former Federal Court chief justice James Allsop and current Federal Court judge Michael Lee are also being considered.
The possibility of Virginia Bell leading the commission has sparked controversy, with former Treasurer Josh Frydenberg expressing concerns about her appointment. He emphasized the need for a Commissioner who has the full confidence of the Jewish community, especially in the aftermath of the Bondi massacre. The Prime Minister's apparent shift towards a Federal royal commission follows a gradual change in stance, with Mr. Albanese now open to exploring all avenues to address anti-Semitism and ensure national healing.
A recent poll indicates that a majority of voters support the Government calling a Federal royal commission, with One Nation and Coalition voters showing the strongest agreement. Opposition Leader Sussan Ley has also urged the Prime Minister to establish a broad-ranging inquiry that encompasses anti-Semitism and neo-Nazi extremism. As pressure mounts on Mr. Albanese to act decisively, the nation awaits the outcome of his deliberations on the potential royal commission.
