Former Uvalde Schools Officer Faces Trial for Alleged Inaction During 2022 School Shooting
A former Uvalde schools officer, Adrian Gonzales, is facing trial for allegedly failing to protect children during the 2022 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. The shooting resulted in the deaths of 19 students and two teachers at Robb Elementary. Gonzales, along with former Uvalde schools police chief Pete Arredondo, are the only two officers facing criminal charges over the delayed response to the attack. The trial, which could last up to three weeks, begins with jury selection.
Gonzales is charged with 29 counts of child abandonment or endangerment, which could lead to up to two years in prison if convicted. The indictment alleges that Gonzales put children at risk of injury or death by not engaging, distracting, or delaying the shooter and failing to follow his active shooter training. Despite initial claims that swift law enforcement action saved lives, families described begging police to enter the building and 911 calls from students pleading for help.
State and federal reviews of the shooting highlighted issues in law enforcement training, communication, leadership, and technology. Gonzales reportedly helped evacuate students from other classrooms once it was realized that they were still inside. Some family members of the victims believe more officers should be indicted for their inaction during the attack.
Prosecutors may face challenges in securing a conviction, as juries are often hesitant to convict law enforcement officers for inaction. The trial was moved to Corpus Christi at the request of Gonzales' attorneys, who argued that he could not receive a fair trial in Uvalde. The town still bears reminders of the tragic event, with Robb Elementary closed but standing, memorials in place, and murals depicting the victims on various buildings.
Despite the distance to Corpus Christi, family members of the victims are determined to attend the trial regularly to ensure that the jury understands the impact of the tragedy on their lives. The trial is a significant step in seeking justice for the lives lost during the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
