Minnesota Child Care Fraud Investigations: Ensuring Compliance and Safety

The Department of Children, Youth, and Families in Minnesota has confirmed that child care centers accused of fraud were found to be operating properly. This statement was issued in response to concerns raised about the Child Care Assistance Program and a video circulating online. Investigators from the department's Office of Inspector General conducted checks at nine centers mentioned in the video and found them to be in compliance. Ongoing investigations are being conducted into four of the centers and 55 providers receiving funding from the program.
Following allegations of fraud in Minnesota, the federal Department of Health and Human Services announced a freeze on federal child care payments to the state. The nine centers mentioned in the video received a total of $17.4 million in funding in the 2025 fiscal year. The FBI has allocated additional resources to investigate the claims of fraud, and the Justice Department has been looking into fraudulent activities in the state for several years.
A significant fraud scheme involving the nonprofit organization "Feeding Our Future" in Minnesota resulted in criminal charges against 78 individuals. The scheme misused federal Covid-19 relief funds meant for children's meals to fund extravagant lifestyles. The mastermind of the scheme, Aimee Bock, along with others, was convicted of wire fraud and other charges. The state audit revealed lapses in oversight by the Minnesota Department of Education regarding Feeding Our Future.
The Department of Children, Youth, and Families emphasized its commitment to fact-based reviews to combat fraud. It warned against spreading unverified claims and misuse of tip lines, which could jeopardize investigations and create safety risks. The department also highlighted the harmful impact of misinformation on Minnesota's immigrant communities, particularly the Somali population. President Trump's unfounded allegations linking fraud to Somali immigrants have sparked controversy and criticism.
Minnesota has the largest Somali population in the U.S., with many immigrants fleeing civil war in Somalia seeking refuge in the country. The federal government in Somalia has transitioned to a more stable structure in recent years after a period of turmoil. The Department of Children, Youth, and Families reiterated its dedication to addressing fraud and ensuring the safety of families, providers, and employers in the state.
