Francesca Lake: From Kingston to the Met Gala - Celebrating Jamaican Identity in Fashion

Francesca Lake, a London-based designer from Kingston, was pleasantly surprised when Erykah Badu reached out to her six months after showcasing her graduate collection in 2023. Badu wore Lake's creations, including a striking headpiece, to the Met Gala and its afterparty, showcasing the fusion of Jamaican influences in Lake's designs. Lake's work reflects the juxtaposition of modesty and vulgarity, formality and fun, drawing inspiration from Jamaican culture.
Lake's designs feature candy-colored taffeta dresses, oversized raffia pieces, acid-wash denim jorts, and floral separates, embodying an unapologetic eclecticism that celebrates the vibrancy of Jamaican identity. With a background in Cultural Studies from the University of the West Indies and an MA in Fashion from Central Saint Martins, Lake launched her brand in 2024 and made her mark on the London Fashion Week scene with a unique blend of Jamaican flair and high fashion.
Looking ahead, Lake plans to expand her collection to include everyday wear and menswear, aiming to reach a wider audience while staying true to her bold aesthetic. Hats play a significant role in her storytelling, with designs that reflect her personal style and cultural heritage. Through her work, Lake feels a sense of duty to represent Jamaica and break boundaries in the fashion industry, paving the way for other Jamaican creatives.
