December 31: A Day of History, Tragedy, and Reflection

Today marks the end of the year 2025, with December 31 being New Year's Eve. In history, significant events have taken place on this day. In 1999, Russian President Boris Yeltsin resigned, leading to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin becoming the acting president. Thomas Edison showcased his electric incandescent lights to the public for the first time in 1879. New York's Times Square hosted its inaugural New Year's Eve celebration in 1904, drawing a crowd of around 200,000 people.
Tragedies have also occurred on December 31. In 1972, baseball legend Roberto Clemente lost his life in a plane crash while delivering relief supplies to Nicaragua.
