Addressing the Break-In: Nokomis Daycare Center Responds to Vandalism and Allegations

A Somali-run day care center in Minneapolis was broken into earlier this week, resulting in significant vandalism. Nokomis Daycare Center, which was not featured in a viral video alleging fraud by Somali child care centers, held a news conference to address the incident. The center is licensed to care for up to 71 children and is in good standing according to the Minnesota Department of Human Services.

The break-in at Nokomis Daycare Center occurred between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Tuesday, with the burglar causing damage to the building and stealing important documentation related to employees and children. The Minneapolis Police Department was notified of the break-in, and while no loss was reported, the center updated the police on the missing items.

Following the release of the viral video by YouTuber Nick Shirley, which alleged fraud at 10 day care centers in Minnesota, federal authorities announced door-to-door checks of providers in the state. The Department of Homeland Security is conducting investigations at suspected fraud sites, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has frozen all child care payments to Minnesota amid the ongoing investigation.

Day care providers, including those at Nokomis Daycare Center, have expressed their support for Somali-run centers and emphasized the need for investigations into fraud. The Minnesota Department of Children, Youth and Families is reviewing the claims raised in the video and has 55 open investigations related to the Child Care Assistance Program.

Despite the allegations of fraud, some day care centers featured in the video, such as Quality Learning Center and ABC Learning, have denied any wrongdoing. The owner of ABC Learning became emotional while defending her business, stating that the center had never had any problems in its five-and-a-half years of operation.

In light of the ongoing investigation and the freezing of child care payments, the Somali community in Minnesota is facing challenges and backlash. It is crucial for authorities to conduct thorough investigations to ensure the safety and integrity of child care services in the state.
