U.S. Treasury Department Expands Sanctions List to Target Iran and Venezuela's Aggressive Weapons Programs

The U.S. Treasury Department announced the addition of 10 individuals and entities from Iran and Venezuela to its sanctions list due to their involvement in aggressive weapons programs. Among those designated are Venezuela-based Empresa Aeronautica Nacional SA and its chairman, Jose Jesus Urdaneta Gonzalez, who have reportedly facilitated the trade of drones between Iran and Venezuela. Urdaneta is said to have collaborated with Venezuelan and Iranian armed forces on UAV production in Venezuela.

The Treasury Department emphasized its commitment to preventing Iran's military-industrial complex from accessing the U.S. financial system by taking decisive action against those enabling such activities. John Hurley, the department's undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, reiterated the importance of swift measures in this regard.

In response to escalating tensions, the U.S. has intensified its pressure on Venezuela, including a significant military buildup in the southern Caribbean. Additionally, the U.S. has imposed sanctions on individuals connected to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his spouse, further underscoring its stance on the matter.
