Thailand-Cambodia Ceasefire: A Step Towards Lasting Peace
The recent ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia has surpassed the 72-hour mark, marking a significant step towards a more lasting peace between the two countries. The ceasefire was implemented to end 20 days of intense fighting that resulted in casualties and displacement on both sides. Despite the ceasefire, the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers who have been detained since July remains uncertain.
The border clashes, which reignited earlier this month, followed the breakdown of a previous ceasefire deal brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in July. The recent agreement signed by the defence ministers of both countries stipulated that Thailand would release the detained Cambodian soldiers after the ceasefire held for 72 hours.
Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow emphasized the fragility of the ceasefire and the need for both sides to ensure its sustainability and work towards repairing bilateral relations. The Thai army accused Cambodia of breaching the ceasefire by flying drones over Thailand, leading to tensions between the two countries.
In response to the accusations, Cambodian authorities denied the allegations and imposed a ban on the use of drones across the country. The situation was further complicated by a landmine blast at a border area that resulted in a Thai soldier losing a limb, prompting the Thai Foreign Ministry to lodge a formal protest with Cambodia.
Efforts to rebuild mutual trust and consolidate the ceasefire were made during talks hosted by China's Foreign Minister with his Thai and Cambodian counterparts. The agreement reached during the talks emphasized the importance of working together to prevent further escalations and promote peace along the border.
The ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia represents a crucial step towards resolving the border conflicts and fostering peaceful relations between the two countries. Despite the challenges and incidents that have tested the ceasefire, both sides are committed to upholding the agreement and working towards a sustainable peace in the region.
