Rainy Forecast for the 2026 Rose Parade: Don't Forget Your Poncho!

If you're preparing to camp out along Colorado Boulevard to secure a prime spot for the Rose Parade, make sure to pack a reliable poncho. This year, there is a possibility of rain during the parade, which hasn't happened in two decades. The recent holiday rain combined with earlier storms has made this one of the wettest seasons in Southern California, with downtown Los Angeles already receiving over 11 inches of rain. The upcoming wet weather could dampen the parade festivities, which last encountered rain in 2006 and only a few times before that since the parade's inception in 1890.

The forecast predicts rain starting on New Year's Eve night, with up to a tenth of an inch expected, followed by an additional half inch on New Year's Day. Despite the potential showers, the Rose Parade has traditionally been a celebration of Southern California's sunny weather and blooming flowers. The event originated as a way for the Valley Hunt Club to showcase Pasadena's beauty and pleasant climate, evolving from horse-drawn carriages adorned with flowers to the elaborate floats and marching bands seen today.

Over the years, the Rose Parade has grown in scale and popularity, generating significant revenue for the region, including $245 million in 2024. While the parade has showcased diverse floral patterns since its inception, it took several decades before women and people of color were prominently featured in visible roles. The inclusion of women and individuals from different racial backgrounds has increased over time, with this year's grand marshal being basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson, fittingly representing the theme of "The Magic in Teamwork."

The 137th Rose Parade will commence at 8 a.m. on January 1st, covering a 5.5-mile route with floral floats, equestrian units, and marching bands. Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of volunteers is working tirelessly to prepare the floats for their journey down Colorado Boulevard.
