Deceptive Caregiver Scam: Woman Arrested for Exploiting Senior Citizens in South Florida
A woman from South Florida has been accused of stealing money from senior citizens by posing as a home caregiver. Jamisha Shamari Sylvain, 26, was arrested in Deerfield Beach and faces charges including burglary, elderly exploitation, and theft from individuals aged 65 or older. An investigation was launched after a complaint was made about a senior citizen being exploited by an unidentified woman who pretended to be a caregiver at an apartment complex.
The suspect allegedly gained access to the victim's apartment and withdrew $1,600 from his bank account using his bank card. The victim, a 72-year-old man with dementia, was targeted in this scheme. Surveillance footage from a Bank of America ATM in Deerfield Beach captured the transactions, leading to Sylvain's identification as the suspect. Further investigations revealed that Sylvain had engaged in similar thefts by pretending to be a caregiver and gaining access to other victims' apartments.
Sylvain was issued a warrant for her arrest on Nov. 21, and she was apprehended on Dec. 19. During the arrest, she attempted to flee, resulting in an additional charge of resisting arrest. She is currently held in Broward County Jail with bail set at $108,000. The sheriff's office emphasized that Sylvain's actions were not isolated incidents and that she had targeted multiple victims by deceiving them into providing personal information and stealing their debit cards.
