Trump Administration Suspends Green Card Lottery Program Amid Security Concerns

President Donald Trump has suspended the green card lottery program that the suspected gunman in the recent Brown University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology shootings used to enter the U.S. Claudio Neves Valente, a Portuguese national, entered the country in 2017 through the diversity visa (DV) program, which offers up to 55,000 immigrant visas worldwide through random selection. The program aims to prioritize individuals from countries with low immigration rates to the U.S., allowing them to apply for a green card and seek permanent residency. Following recent violent incidents involving individuals who entered the U.S. through the DV program, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem announced the immediate pause of the DV program to prevent further harm to Americans.
Valente was discovered dead in a New Hampshire storage closet after authorities received information from an individual about his whereabouts. The shootings at Brown University and the killing of MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro have raised concerns about the DV program's security measures. The Trump administration has taken steps to address immigration issues, including placing a hold on asylum applications and benefit requests from foreign nationals from 19 countries considered "high risk." USCIS has also implemented changes to evaluate applicants' moral character and community standing in citizenship and asylum applications.
The recent violent incidents have prompted the Trump administration to reevaluate the immigration process, focusing on identifying and removing "violent criminals" while conducting widespread operations targeting undocumented immigrants. USCIS has emphasized the importance of assessing applicants' behavior and community integration in the citizenship process. The administration's efforts to overhaul the immigration system aim to enhance national security and address concerns about individuals entering the U.S. through various visa programs.
