Close Call: Ohio Police Officer Narrowly Escapes Shooting Attempt at Walmart

A shocking video captured the moment a suspect attempted to shoot an Ohio police officer at close range inside a Walmart but was thwarted by a malfunctioning gun and a quick-thinking security worker. The incident occurred in Canton after the suspect and a woman were apprehended for shoplifting.
The suspects were taken to a security room where the male suspect, identified as Shane Newman, 21, was questioned and searched by a police officer. The situation initially seemed calm as the officer interacted with the suspects in the presence of a Walmart employee.
Suddenly, Newman pulled out a gun and tried to shoot the officer while the woman screamed in protest. The gun malfunctioned, and a clicking sound was heard. Despite a Walmart worker's attempt to restrain Newman, he tried to fire the gun again, but it failed to discharge.
The quick actions of the worker, who disarmed Newman, allowed the officer to take control of the situation and subdue the suspect until backup arrived. The officer later revealed that Newman had pointed the gun at his head but the weapon did not fire.
The officer refrained from shooting Newman to avoid hitting the Walmart employee who was trying to disarm the suspect. Newman, who had an active warrant for his arrest and was considered armed and dangerous, was charged with attempted murder and felonious assault on a police officer.
The female suspect, Katerina Jefferey, faced charges of complicity to commit robbery and possession of ammunition while under disability. Before the violent incident, Newman had handed over a container of illegal drugs during a search conducted by the officer.
The tense situation escalated quickly, leading to the suspects' arrest and charges filed against them. The officer's quick thinking and the Walmart worker's bravery prevented a potentially tragic outcome in the store.
