Americans collectively spend a significant amount of money on alcohol each year, with a total of $228 billion spent on alcoholic beverages in the United States in the past year. SmartAsset analyzed data from the U.S. Department of Commerce and found that Alaska had the highest average spending per adult at around $1,250, followed closely by Wyoming, Colorado, and Massachusetts.
In terms of total spending by states, California topped the list with approximately $29 billion spent on alcohol, followed by Texas, Florida, and New York. On the other end of the spectrum, North Dakota had the lowest state spending at $478 million, with Vermont, South Dakota, and Wyoming following suit.
