Legal Battle Over Beyoncé's 'Alien Superstar' Sample: Parkwood Entertainment vs. Soundmen on Wax Records

Beyoncé's label and management company, Parkwood Entertainment, have filed court papers stating that they obtained the necessary licenses for the EDM sample used in her song "Alien Superstar" from her 2022 Renaissance album. The indie label Soundmen on Wax Records had filed a copyright lawsuit claiming ownership of the 1998 song "Moonraker," which Beyoncé sampled in the track. Parkwood maintains that they properly licensed the sample from the original artist, John Holiday, for a fee and a share of the royalties.
The dispute arises from Soundmen on Wax's claim that they acquired the rights to "Moonraker" from John Holiday in 1998 as part of a distribution deal, suggesting they should have been the ones to clear the sample for Beyoncé's use. However, Parkwood argues that there is no documentation to support this transfer of rights to Soundmen on Wax, making their claim invalid. Parkwood's legal team asserts that they acted in good faith by obtaining the necessary licenses from Holiday directly.
Parkwood's lawyers from Latham & Watkins argue that the lawsuit should be dismissed due to the lack of evidence supporting Soundmen on Wax's claim to the rights of "Moonraker." Sony Music and Warner Chappell, also named in the lawsuit, support Parkwood's motion to dismiss. Beyoncé herself is not a defendant in the case, as she is not being sued directly.
Beyoncé's album Renaissance, released in August 2022, features a number of samples and interpolations that have led to legal challenges. While some artists, like Robin S, embraced their songs being sampled on the album, others, such as Kelis, expressed dissatisfaction. The controversy surrounding the samples has resulted in multiple lawsuits, including the one related to the song "Alien Superstar," which is currently under dispute.
The legal battle over the use of the "Moonraker" sample in Beyoncé's "Alien Superstar" highlights the complexities of clearing samples in the music industry. As the case unfolds, it will be interesting to see how the court rules on the validity of the licensing agreements and the ownership of the rights to the sampled song.
