Escalating Conflict: Thai Bombing Endangers Cambodian Shelters Along Border

The ongoing conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has escalated, with reports of Thai bombing reaching deeper into Cambodian territory, endangering shelters for displaced individuals along the border. Cambodia's defense and information ministries reported that Thai F-16 fighter jets dropped bombs near camps for displaced people in two districts, causing significant damage. The combat zone is restricted, making it challenging to verify claims from both sides.

The dispute between Thailand and Cambodia revolves around competing claims to border land, some of which contain ancient temple ruins. The recent fighting has resulted in casualties on both sides, with over two dozen reported deaths and more than half a million people displaced. Thailand claims to have inflicted significant damage on Cambodia's military, including the destruction of tanks, armored vehicles, artillery systems, drones, and communication hubs.

In response to the conflict, Thai officials are attempting to cut off the supply of fuel and weapons to Cambodia, without implementing a full-scale naval blockade. They have designated a "high-risk area" in the Gulf of Thailand and are monitoring Thai-registered vessels. Additionally, Thailand aims to restrict the flow of military supplies through a land checkpoint near Cambodian territory. The fighting has also damaged historical sites, with Thai officials blaming Cambodia for using them as military bases.

Efforts to establish a ceasefire, previously promoted by U.S. President Donald Trump, have been derailed by the renewed conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. Despite Trump's announcement of an agreement to renew the ceasefire, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul denied making any commitment, while Cambodia stated it was continuing to fight in self-defense. The situation remains tense, with both countries engaged in heavy combat along the border.
