Walkley Foundation Governance Dispute: Directors Resign Amid Struggle for Independence

Three directors of the Walkley Foundation, including the recent Gold Walkley winner, have stepped down following a prolonged internal struggle over the governance of the organization responsible for the prestigious Walkley Awards. Adele Ferguson, the chair of the foundation and this year's top award recipient, along with former Four Corners head Sally Neighbour and writer Victoria Laurie, announced their resignation after their proposed reforms to the foundation's constitution were rejected by the union. The trio had been advocating for the addition of two independent directors to the board to reduce the influence of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA).

The resignations mark the end of a lengthy dispute that aimed to enhance the foundation's governance by introducing new independent voices to the board. The trio's proposal was met with resistance from the union, which suggested adding a single MEAA-aligned director to the board, a move that the resigning directors believed would further entrench the union's control over the foundation. Despite engaging in discussions for over two years and proposing widely supported reforms, the trio felt that the union's proposal did not align with the goal of strengthening the foundation's independence and governance.

In response to the resignations, the union offered to expand the board to include two new director positions, maintaining control by adding one non-union director and one additional union-appointed director. The remaining board members expressed disappointment over the resignations, with the MEAA stating that most of the contentious issues had been resolved in principle and accusing the resigning directors of misrepresenting their proposal.

The departure of the three directors has brought an end to a protracted battle over the governance of the Walkley Foundation, highlighting the challenges of balancing independence and union influence within the organization. The foundation will now need to navigate the aftermath of these resignations and work towards ensuring transparency and effective governance in the future.
