Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza had an outstanding season and was recently honored with the prestigious 2025 Heisman Trophy Award. Mendoza emerged victorious over other talented quarterbacks like Julian Sayin from Ohio State and Diego Pavia from Vanderbilt, as well as Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. This achievement marks a historic moment for the Hoosiers, with Mendoza becoming the first player in the team's history to claim the Heisman Trophy and only the second player to be a finalist for the award, following Anthony Thompson in 1989.
Standing tall at 6-foot-5, Mendoza played a pivotal role in Indiana's remarkable season, culminating in a perfect 13-0 record and a victory over Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game. His impressive stats include 2,980 passing yards, a Big Ten-leading 33 passing touchdowns, six interceptions, and a stellar 181.4 passer rating this season. Mendoza's completion rate of 71.5% showcases his accuracy, and he has also contributed 240 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. These outstanding performances earned him the title of 2025 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year.
Prior to his success at Indiana, Mendoza spent his first two collegiate seasons at Cal, where he showcased his talent by throwing for 3,004 yards in 2024 and maintaining an average of 15 passing touchdowns per season.
