New Miami Mayor Eileen Higgins: A Democrat's Victory and Vision for the City

Miami voters have elected former County Commissioner Eileen Higgins as their new mayor, defeating former Miami City Manager Emilio Gonzalez in a runoff election. This marks the first time in over three decades that a Democrat has been chosen as mayor of Miami. Higgins secured 59% of the vote, while Gonzalez received nearly 41%, according to unofficial results from the Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections. The campaign, which began with a crowded field of 13 candidates, focused on key issues such as immigration, housing, flooding, city growth, and leadership style.

During a CBS News Miami debate moderated by Jim DeFede, Higgins and Gonzalez presented their visions for the city, giving voters an opportunity to compare their platforms. While the race was officially nonpartisan, Higgins had the support of prominent Democrats, while Republicans, including Gov. Ron DeSantis and President Trump, endorsed Gonzalez. Higgins, who served eight years on the Miami-Dade County Commission, campaigned on restoring public trust, promoting collaborative leadership, and addressing affordable housing challenges in the city.

One of the cornerstones of Higgins' platform was the utilization of city-owned land to develop housing for working families. She criticized Miami's rapid growth without corresponding improvements in services and proposed a full review of city spending. Higgins also advocated for updating regulations to enhance drainage citywide, supporting the expansion of the City Commission from five to nine members to ensure better representation for all communities. On immigration enforcement, Higgins expressed strong concerns about recent actions in Miami, emphasizing the need for humane policies while also pledging to work with the Trump administration on common ground issues.

As the newly elected mayor, Higgins will prioritize addressing housing affordability, climate resilience, and government transparency. Her victory signifies a shift in Miami's political landscape and sets the stage for significant policy changes in the future.
