Miami Heat Player Terry Rozier Faces Federal Charges for Alleged Involvement in Illegal Gambling Scheme

Miami Heat player Terry Rozier is facing charges related to his alleged involvement in helping gamblers place bets on his performance in NBA games. The 31-year-old point guard is scheduled to appear in a New York court for his arraignment on federal wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges. Rozier, along with five co-defendants, will attend a pre-trial hearing on the case later in the day.

Rozier, who previously appeared before a federal judge in Orlando, has denied the charges through his lawyer, Jim Trusty. Prosecutors claim that Rozier conspired with friends to manipulate a game in March 2023 while playing for the Charlotte Hornets, allowing gamblers to profit from bets on his early exit from the game due to a supposed injury.

The federal investigation into illegal gambling operations linked to professional sports has led to the arrest of over 30 individuals, including several Mafia figures. Rozier is one of three current or former NBA players implicated in the investigation, along with Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and former player Damon Jones. Both Billups and Rozier have been placed on unpaid leave from their respective teams as their legal proceedings unfold.

Having earned approximately $160 million during his 10-year NBA career, Rozier was a first-round pick for the Boston Celtics in 2015 before being traded to the Miami Heat by the Charlotte Hornets. The outcome of Rozier's court case remains to be seen as he faces the legal ramifications of the allegations against him.
