Legal Troubles: Miami Heat's Terry Rozier Faces Charges in Gambling Scandal
Miami Heat player Terry Rozier is facing legal trouble as he is scheduled to appear in a New York court on charges related to assisting gamblers in placing bets on his performance in NBA games. The 31-year-old point guard will be arraigned in Brooklyn federal court on federal wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges. Rozier, along with five co-defendants, will attend a pre-trial hearing on the case later in the day.
Previously, Rozier appeared before a federal judge in Orlando where he was released with conditions after prosecutors announced the indictment. His lawyer, Jim Trusty, denied the charges, stating that Rozier is not a gambler and is looking forward to fighting the allegations. Prosecutors allege that Rozier conspired with friends to manipulate bets on his performance in a March 2023 game while playing for the Charlotte Hornets.
During the game against the New Orleans Pelicans, Rozier played for a short period before leaving due to a foot issue, allowing gamblers to place wagers that resulted in significant winnings. This incident is part of a larger federal crackdown on illegal gambling operations tied to professional sports, involving over 30 arrests, including individuals with Mafia connections.
Rozier is one of three current or former NBA players implicated in the investigation, with others like Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and former player Damon Jones also facing charges related to illegal gambling activities. Both Billups and Rozier have been placed on unpaid leave from their respective teams as their legal proceedings unfold.
Having earned approximately $160 million during his 10-year NBA career, Rozier was a first-round pick for the Boston Celtics in 2015 and was later traded to the Miami Heat. The outcome of his court case will determine the impact on his professional basketball career.
