ICE Warns of Public Safety Risk: Illinois Releases Violent Criminal Illegal Aliens Despite Active Detainers

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued a warning regarding the release of violent criminal illegal aliens by Illinois officials despite having active immigration detainers, which poses a risk to public safety. ICE's senior official expressed concern about the release of tens of thousands of criminal illegal aliens in Illinois, including individuals involved in serious crimes like murder, rape, child pornography, and armed robbery.
ICE emphasized the need for the swift removal of these offenders from the United States to prevent them from causing harm to law-abiding citizens. Data provided by ICE revealed that Illinois has released 1,768 criminal aliens with active detainers since January 2025, with offenses ranging from homicides and assaults to burglaries, weapons offenses, and sexual-predatory crimes.
Additionally, there are 4,015 criminal aliens with pending detainers still in state or local custody, including individuals connected to 51 homicides and over 800 sexual-predatory offenses. ICE highlighted cases where detainers were not honored, leading federal officers to track down offenders post-release, such as Victor Manuel Mendoza-Garcia, Juan Morales Martinez, and Amilcar Waldo Gonzalez-Jimenez, who were involved in serious crimes.
Some of the cases cited by ICE involved offenders convicted of child abduction, predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, attempted murder, and aggravated kidnapping. Despite some offenders being re-arrested or removed from the country by ICE, the agency raised concerns about Illinois' refusal to honor immigration detainers, which puts public safety at risk.
ICE questioned whether Illinois intends to change its approach or continue releasing violent offenders who could potentially pose a threat to the community. The agency stressed the importance of addressing this issue to prevent dangerous criminals from being released back into society, potentially endangering the public.
