Florida's Death Penalty Debate: The Controversy Surrounding the State's Record-High Executions

The debate surrounding the death penalty in Florida has intensified as the state prepares to execute its 18th person this year. Mark Allen Geralds, a 58-year-old convicted of robbing and fatally stabbing Tressa Pettibone in 1989, is set to be executed at the Florida State Prison in Raiford on Tuesday. Geralds' decision not to contest his execution has paved the way for his lethal injection at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, making it the 18th execution in Florida this year, the highest number in a single year. With over 250 individuals currently on Florida's Death Row, Governor Ron DeSantis has accelerated the pace of executions, with another execution scheduled before the year's end. Serial killer Frank Athen Walls is slated for execution on December 18th for his involvement in five murders in the 1980s in Okaloosa County.
