Escape from St. Landry Parish Jail: Violent Inmates Break Out in Daring Jailbreak

Two inmates accused of violent crimes, including second-degree attempted murder, managed to escape from a jail in southwestern Louisiana by removing parts of a wall and using sheets to climb another wall. A third inmate who participated in the escape took his own life after being located. This incident is the latest in a series of daring jailbreaks in Louisiana, with a previous escape involving 10 inmates from a New Orleans jail earlier this year.

The escape from the St. Landry Parish Jail occurred when the inmates discovered a weak spot in an upper wall area, allowing them to remove concrete blocks and make their way out. They then used sheets and other materials to scale the exterior wall, reach a first-floor roof, and descend to the ground. The details of the escape are currently under internal investigation by authorities.

The two remaining escaped inmates are identified as Keith Eli, 24, and Johnathan Jevon Joseph, 24, both from Opelousas. Eli was facing a second-degree attempted murder charge, while Joseph was facing multiple charges, including principal to first-degree rape. The third escapee, Joseph Allen Harrington, 26, from Melville, took his own life after being discovered by law enforcement.

Following a tip from a witness who recognized Harrington, police located him pushing a black e-bike near a residence. After urging him to surrender using a loudspeaker, officers heard a gunshot from inside the home. Harrington was found deceased, having shot himself with a hunting rifle. The sheriff's office emphasized that there is no evidence suggesting the escapees have left the parish and advised residents to secure their properties.

While the sheriff's department spokesperson acknowledged that this escape was more creative than previous attempts, he emphasized the seriousness of the situation, as the escapees are facing violent felony charges and may be desperate to avoid capture. Residents are urged to report any sightings or information related to the escaped inmates, and anyone found aiding them will face legal consequences.
