Critical Juncture: Gaza Ceasefire Progress and Challenges

The Gaza ceasefire is at a critical juncture as the first phase nears completion, with only one Israeli hostage remaining in Gaza. Qatar's Prime Minister emphasized the need for international mediators, led by the U.S., to push forward to the second phase to solidify the agreement. The ceasefire, which began in October, has not yet achieved full stability in Gaza, with ongoing violence reported.

Despite the ceasefire, over 360 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since its implementation. Two Palestinians were recently killed in an Israeli airstrike, highlighting the fragile situation. The first phase of President Trump's peace plan involved a prisoner exchange, but the subsequent phases, including the deployment of an international security force and disarmament of Hamas, are yet to commence.

An international body, expected to be led by President Trump, will oversee the ceasefire and work towards a long-term solution, potentially leading to Palestinian independence. Qatar's Prime Minister stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of the conflict beyond Gaza, including the West Bank and Palestinian statehood. Turkey's Foreign Minister raised concerns about the formation of an international security force for Gaza, citing uncertainties about participation and command structure.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated in 2023, resulting in significant casualties on both sides. The Gaza Health Ministry reports a high number of civilian deaths, with concerns about the use of human shields by Hamas. The situation remains complex, with the need for sustained international efforts to achieve lasting peace in the region.
