The rendezvous was said to be scheduled for August 23, 2024, in Phoenix, Arizona, after Kennedy endorsed Trump at a rally in Glendale. However, the affair was exposed when Nuzzi's ex-fiancé, Ryan Lizza, discovered their sexting relationship.
Lizza revealed in his Substack series that Nuzzi and the 71-year-old Kennedy had planned to consummate their relationship after Kennedy withdrew from the presidential race. The timing seemed ideal as Kennedy would no longer be under the media spotlight, and Nuzzi believed the absence of Secret Service protection would make the encounter easier. However, Lizza's involvement in covering the rally where Kennedy was set to endorse Trump led to the revelation of the affair, causing Nuzzi to cancel the planned rendezvous.
In a previous chapter of his series, Lizza accused Nuzzi of transitioning from a journalist to a political operative for Kennedy during their affair. Nuzzi later acknowledged the fling in a memoir, vaguely referring to Kennedy as "the politician."
