Record-Breaking Black Friday: E-Commerce Trends and Insights

The Black Friday online shopping spree in the United States set a new record this year, with consumers spending a whopping $11.8 billion on purchases, marking a 9.1% increase from the previous year. This surge in digital spending highlights the growing trend towards e-commerce during the holiday season and emphasizes the significant role of mobile shopping and artificial intelligence. The peak online traffic was observed between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time, with shoppers spending an impressive $12.5 million per minute during that period. Various product categories saw substantial sales increases, including video game consoles, televisions, headphones, speakers, and refrigerators. Discounts were prevalent across toys, electronics, televisions, and clothing, with top-selling items ranging from LEGO products to gaming consoles like the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5.

Mobile devices played a dominant role in the shopping experience, accounting for 55.2% of all online sales, totaling $6.5 billion. This shift towards mobile shopping supports impulse purchases and drives overall e-commerce growth, making mobile the primary form of shopping during the Christmas season. Social commerce also saw significant growth, contributing 3.4% of online purchases, a notable increase from the previous year. Surprisingly, Artificial Intelligence (AI) played a crucial role in driving traffic to retail websites, resulting in an 805% increase compared to the previous year. Consumers utilized AI tools to research products and find deals, particularly in categories like video games, appliances, electronics, toys, and baby/personal care items. Shoppers arriving at websites through AI channels were 38% more likely to make a purchase than those arriving through other channels.
