Exploring the New Olympic Events at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics

The upcoming Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy will feature eight new Olympic events, including the debut of ski mountaineering, also known as "skimo." This sport combines elements of Alpine and cross-country skiing, presenting athletes with physical and technical challenges as they navigate a course that includes ascents, descents, and on-foot sections with skis attached to their backpacks.

During the ski mountaineering race, athletes use skins on their skis to grip the snow for climbing, remove their skis for on-foot sections, and complete the downhill descent without skins. The competition typically includes various stages like heats, semifinals, and a final, with the fastest athlete in the final declared the winner.

Apart from ski mountaineering, the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics will introduce new events in existing sports. However, the alpine skiing mixed team parallel event will not return for the 2026 Games, as it was discontinued without a specific reason provided by the International Olympic Committee. The athlete quota spots from this event will be reallocated among other sports to maintain the total number of athletes at 2,900.

The 2026 Winter Olympics are scheduled to take place from February 6 to 22 and will be broadcast on NBC networks and streaming on Peacock. Stay tuned for the exciting debut of ski mountaineering and other new events at the upcoming Winter Games in Milan and Cortina.
