Recent Surge of Gun Violence in New York City Sparks Concerns: Police Investigate Multiple Shootings Before Thanksgiving

A surge of gun violence erupted in New York City just before Thanksgiving, with seven people being shot within a span of four hours, according to police reports. The first incident occurred in downtown Brooklyn, where an 18-year-old man and woman were shot in the legs following an argument with the gunman. They were taken to a nearby hospital and are expected to recover.
In the Bronx, two men, aged 23 and 22, were shot on Ryer Ave. near E. 184th St. Both victims sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The shooter fled the scene, and the incident took place near a basketball court.
Meanwhile, in Queens, a 24-year-old man narrowly avoided a fatal gunshot wound during a failed robbery attempt in Astoria. The victim was grazed on the head by a bullet fired by one of the masked assailants. The suspects fled in a black Jeep Cherokee, leaving the victim to seek medical attention at a nearby hospital.
Shortly after in the Bronx, a man and a woman were shot at a deli and grocery store on Melrose Ave. Both victims, aged 22 and 25, were injured but are expected to survive. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown.
Law enforcement officials are actively investigating the incidents and are seeking surveillance footage to identify the perpetrators. No arrests have been made in connection with the shootings. The spike in violence on Wednesday marked a significant increase compared to the same day last year, with a total of four shootings and seven victims reported across the city.
Despite the recent uptick in gun violence, overall shooting incidents in New York City have decreased by 23% in 2025 compared to the previous year. The number of shooting victims has also declined, indicating a positive trend in reducing gun-related crimes in the city.
Individuals with information about the shootings are encouraged to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All information provided will be treated confidentially. The authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety and security of the community amidst these troubling incidents.
