Tragic Incidents Highlight Dangers of Surf Conditions in Big Sur, California

Dangerous surf conditions off the coast of Big Sur, California led to a tragic incident where three individuals were swept into the ocean. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office reported that a man and two women were pulled into the water at Soberanes Point during the afternoon swell. While the women were rescued and taken to a hospital, the man, described as being in his 30s, remains missing. Despite search efforts, the Coast Guard helicopter lost sight of a body in the water due to heavy waves, prompting the search to shift to a recovery mission.

This incident occurred just a week after a father and his 7-year-old daughter lost their lives in powerful surf at Garrapata Beach. The father, identified as Yuji Hu, tragically passed away while trying to save his daughter, Anzi Hu, who was swept away by the waves. Despite the efforts of a tourist and an off-duty lifeguard who rushed to help the family, Yuji Hu could not be revived after being recovered from the water. Anzi's mother was treated for mild hypothermia, and her 2-year-old sibling, who was on the beach, was unharmed.

Following the incident, a massive search operation was launched involving deputies, state parks rangers, the US Coast Guard, California Highway Patrol air support, and search-and-rescue volunteers. The search for the missing man near Soberanes Point continues as authorities work to recover his body from the treacherous waters off the Central Coast of California.
