American Senators Criticize U.S. Peace Proposal for Ukraine at Halifax Security Conference

At an international security conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia, American senators criticized a U.S. peace proposal for Ukraine, calling it a serious geopolitical mistake. The 28-point plan, developed by the Trump administration and the Kremlin without Ukraine's involvement, includes concessions to Russian demands that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has consistently rejected.

During a panel discussion at the Halifax International Security Forum, Independent Maine Sen. Angus King described the proposal as rewarding aggression and compared it to historic failed acts of appeasement. Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire also expressed strong opposition to the plan, with Shaheen calling it a "Putin plan" and criticizing President Trump for allowing Putin to influence him.

Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed the proposal, suggesting it could lead to a final peace settlement if Ukraine and its European allies agree. Zelenskyy, while not outright rejecting the plan, emphasized the need for fair treatment and pledged to work with Washington and other partners during this challenging time.

The Halifax International Security Forum, now in its 17th year, brings together military officials, U.S. senators, diplomats, and scholars. This year, the Trump administration suspended the participation of U.S. defense officials in events by think tanks, including the Halifax International Security Forum. The strained relations between Canada and the U.S., exacerbated by trade disputes and controversial statements by President Trump, have led to concerns among Canadian officials and a decline in tourism to the U.S.

The strong opposition from American senators to the U.S. peace proposal for Ukraine reflects the deep divisions and concerns within the U.S. government regarding foreign policy decisions. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely as efforts to reach a peaceful resolution in Ukraine face significant challenges.
