2026 Congressional Elections: Democrats Lead in Early Polls Amid Dissatisfaction with Major Parties
A recent national poll conducted by Marquette Law School from Nov. 5–12, 2025, indicates that Democrats are currently leading Republicans in early expectations for the 2026 congressional elections. The survey, conducted after the Nov. 4 off-year elections, also highlights widespread dissatisfaction with both major parties, particularly in light of the recent government shutdown, and mixed evaluations of President Donald Trump's performance.
Among registered voters, 49% express a preference for a Democratic candidate for Congress, while 44% lean towards Republicans. This gap widens among voters who are certain to vote, with 53% favoring Democrats and 44% supporting Republicans. Party loyalty remains strong, with 96% of Democrats and 91% of Republicans sticking with their respective parties. Independents, on the other hand, show a preference for Democrats by a significant margin.
The poll also reveals low approval ratings for both parties in Congress, with Republicans viewed slightly less negatively than Democrats. Notably, Democrats' approval of their own party has seen a significant increase from September to November. Public opinion is divided on the responsibility for the recent government shutdown, with a majority disapproving of President Trump's handling of the situation.
Approval ratings for President Trump remain at 43%, with varying levels of support across different issues. Economic concerns, particularly inflation and cost of living, continue to be top priorities for Americans. Views on tariffs and foreign affairs, including support for deporting immigrants in the U.S. illegally, also feature prominently in the poll results.
The survey indicates that Americans hold unfavorable views of certain international figures and countries, with strong opinions on immigration policies and work permits for undocumented immigrants. Additionally, public sentiment on political figures and recent news items, such as the deployment of the National Guard and the New York City mayoral election, are highlighted in the poll findings.
Overall, the Marquette Law School Poll provides valuable insights into voter preferences, party approval ratings, and key issues shaping public opinion leading up to the 2026 congressional elections.
