ICE: United States, Canada, and Finland Collaborate to Build New Icebreakers for Arctic Security

The United States is enhancing its Coast Guard fleet by collaborating with Canada and Finland to build new icebreakers. The Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE) was established in July 2024 to counter Russia's Arctic expansion. With Finland's shipbuilding expertise, the U.S. and Canada aim to meet the growing demand for icebreakers. This partnership marks a significant step in securing the Arctic region and its resources for future generations. The agreement includes the construction of 11 new icebreakers over the coming years, with Finland already providing the Storis icebreaker to the U.S. The initiative is expected to boost the economy and create job opportunities for Americans, as workers will receive training from Canada on icebreaker construction. A shipyard in Texas has been acquired for future shipbuilding operations once training is completed.
